A lean NOx trap (LNT) is a device that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions
from a lean burn internal combustion engine. It's also known as a NOx
adsorber or NOx Storage-Reduction (NSR) catalyst.
How it works:
- Oxidation: The LNT oxidizes NO intoNO2.
- Entrapment: The LNT traps NO2 on an alkali Earth metal
as nitrates.
- Regeneration: The LNT regenerates in a fuel-rich
atmosphere, reducing the trapped Nox to N2, NH3, and N2.
LNTs are preferably used in passenger cars and light-duty diesel
engines
