A Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) is used in diesel engines to reduce harmful
pollutants in the exhaust gas primarily HC and CO.
How a DOC Works
- The DOC contains a ceramic or metallic substrate coated with a catalytic
material (usually a combination of platinum, palladium, or
rhodium ).
- As exhaust gases flow through the catalyst, chemical reactions occur
that convert harmful pollutants of HC and CO into less harmful
substances as CO2 and water (H2O). It also helps oxidize aldehydes and
aromatic Compounds to less harmful substances.
- DOC doesn’t directly reduce PM, however, it can oxidize some
soluble organic fractions (SOFs) within the PM, aiding in downstream
filtration.
- DOC does not address nitrogen oxides (NOx).
