Subject: Need and Solutions for Controlling Evaporative Emissions in Indian Scenario

Date: Wednesday, 28th May 2025

Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM (IST)

Speaker: Dr. Terry Lathem, Manager – Government Relations, Ingevity Inc., USA

Synopsis of the Webinar Presentation:

Across India, petrol-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles emit significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through evaporative and refueling processes—emissions that often far exceed those from the tailpipe. The Economic Times of India has described these emissions as a “silent threat,” as they occur primarily when vehicles are not in use, such as during parking or refueling, unlike exhaust emissions which are only produced during vehicle operation. During India’s hot summer months, daily evaporative emissions of VOCs from petrol-fueled ICE vehicles could be substantial vehicle per day.

As India considers its next phase of emission regulations under Bharat Stage 7, it is critical to recognize the country’s unique environmental conditions, which necessitates a different strategy than simply mirroring the European Euro 7 standards. This presentation will introduce the issue of evaporative emissions, review international control standards and technologies, and highlight how India can achieve substantial evaporative emissions reductions
